    The Edge Chronicles
by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell

Twig always knew he was different.  First of all, although he has been raised by woodtrolls, he is obviously not the same as them.  He is a human.  He finds out that he has been abandoned in the Deepwoods, and becomes determined to find where he came from.  On his quest he befriends many other odd creatures, and makes enemies out of others.
